Selaco Any% Speedrun in 48:51 (World Record)
If you haven't played this game, you're seriously missing out. Anyway, now that you've bought the game, let me tell you a little about it.
Selaco is a GZDoom game that pushes the engine to its absolute limit. The combat, the movement, the graphics, it's all great. There are tons of secrets and so many ways to play the game, it'll make your head spin. There's so much replay value in this game that I could spend what feels like forever playing this and still find new things. Plus, since it's a GZDoom game that's fully open source, it has great mod support through the Steam workshop. I've already made a few custom maps, and plenty of people have made some really great mods you can download very easily.
Anyway, about the speedrun. This game is a thriller. I can't tell you enough how crazy the movement mechanics are. The closest thing I could compare the movement to in Unreal Tournament. At least, that's what the dashes feel like to me (except you don't have to double tap the movement keys). Plus, there's a slide move where you can jump to gain lots of speed. You'd be surprised how deep the movement can get even with what sounds like very simple movement mechanics.
The combat is where this game really shines, though. However, in the speedrun, you don't really get to see it. I promise, the enemies are insanely smart and work together in all sorts of creative ways. Speedrunners can go straight past most of the enemies because of the scarab launcher alt fire for the assault rifle. In Selaco, you can find weapon kits that give you alternate fire modes for certain guns. In level 2, there's an out of bounds secret that turns your alternate fire into a crazy powerful plasma beam called the Scarab Launcher, inspired by a weapon in the Halo games. If you've played Halo 2, you know what the scarab gun is. That's what this is like. Anyway, it destroys pretty much everything in your path, so it sort of trivializes the combat. I'll be honest that I'm not a huge fan of it, but a speedrun is a speedrun, and it definitely saves time.
If you watched my last run, the 55:51, that run is a showcase of the time saves and sequence breaks I was able to find basically on my own. However, this run demonstrates all the new times saves that BloodThunder has been finding over the last few days. He found a way to skip the "Jonathan" heavy barrel sequence in level 6-1a, a way to hold doors open with a barrel (which isn't normally possible), and a smaller time save where you skip an enemy encounter at the end of level 4, which I didn't do in this run. Unfortunately, I didn't practice that skip, so I wasn't going to try it here. I haven't timed it exactly, but it saves a couple of seconds, so I need to implement that in the next speedrun I do.
If any new sequence breaks get found in the next couple of days, I'll definitely do another run. If not, I'm going to move on to other categories. I'd love to pull off a run on the harder difficulties, too. Plus, there's always 100%. However, I've been getting really into modding this game, so I want to spend some time on that, too.

Man, this game is incredible. If you haven't played it, definitely give it a shot. It's like the best possible combination of Half-Life and Doom 3, with a bit of F.E.A.R. mixed in, all somehow put together in a GZDoom game.     Even if you do the out of bounds trick what about the stuff you have to do in bounds such as the disarming nukes battling the boss submarine can you just skip all this and simply drive right to the end and it counts?

      The only objective that's technically required is the one at the very end where you have to place the mines on the submarines, right before the boss fight. Everything else is just there to get you to that point.

      @@rjames0820 actually, in the time since I’ve done this run, someone did make a timer that pauses during loading screens. I’ll use that in my next run. I do think it could be a few minutes faster, even without the loading screen pauses. I’m focusing on a custom map I’m working on, but I’ll get back to speedruns after that.

    I work with Ultimate Doom Builder for Doom and Doom 2. How simple is setting up Selaco with Ultimate Doom Builder? I'm concerned I'll screw up the setup.

      It's pretty easy once you know what to do. The initial setup is the main difference between using Ultimate Doom Builder for Doom vs. Selaco. First, you need to go to Selaco's game directory and start up Ultimate Selaco Builder. You can also just hit the Play button on Steam and select the level editor option. To get the game files in the editor, you need to navigate to your game folder, open Selaco.ipk3 in Windows Explorer or 7zip, take all the files in there, and put it in a folder inside your game directory. What that means is you end up with a folder, maybe called something like "resources" or "PK3 extract", and it has all the files from Selaco.ipk3 extracted to that directory. Then, when you load up Ultimate Selaco Builder, the only thing you need to do when starting a map is to add a resource, select the "from directory" tab, then add that folder as the directory. You don't need to add GZDoom as a resource or anything else. Only use the Selaco PK3 extract directory. After that, you're good to go. It should be pretty much exactly the same as Doom, except with Selaco's assets. When you want to upload your map to the Steam workshop, go to the game directory and run WorkshopUpload.exe. All the instructions show up on the screen after that. Let me know if you have any more questions, and I'd also recommend joining the Selaco discord, because they have a channel for mapping and modding, and all the developers are really active on there.

      @@FitterSpace So close to success. I managed to get the textures into the project, but now the textures are all a solid grey color when attempting to apply them to a floor, wall, or ceiling.

      @@daycampgames That means the resource you added didn't work. You need to make sure you took everything from Selaco.ipk3 and put it in a folder somewhere in your game directory. Then, when you're loading the map, make sure you add a resource, then go to the "from directory" tab, and select the entire folder you dropped the PK3 stuff in as that folder. After that, everything should show up.

    How come you're shooting out so many civvy tires? At first I thought it was to keep them from driving into your path but that can't be it.

      There are a couple of reasons. At the beginning, it's mostly for entertainment. But there are a few places like the two cars at 0:45 where I use them to force Zoe to drive closer to the left side of the road. That makes her turn that corner a little tighter, which saves time. I occasionally shoot people's tires to get them out of the way later, like the one at 1:49. What's interesting is that the cars in this game actually respawn later in the level. That means there are actually only a handful of cars in the driving levels, and the game just moves them when you drive far enough past them. I guess that was more efficient than actually having lots of cars driving around. By shooting the car's tires, you can change when they despawn, which can manipulate traffic later on.

    You knock over one can and a guard hears it through a door. Then another guard dumps at least 3 mags into a wall and no one seems to notice. Logic!       It was! That, and the cutscene where Bloch talks to Zoe. The cutscene skips save a few seconds, even though you have to wait a little while for the grenade to blow up.

      If you stand on top of the concrete barriers, the explosion doesn't kill you. Whoever designed that part of the game basically made it where the trigger that kills you is only on the floor, so if you can stand somewhere above the floor, it won't kill you.

The main reason is that the any% TAS that already exists gets most of the platinum medals anyway, and the only platinum medals left over are the ones in the autoscroller levels. The closest thing to a 100% TAS is All Tokens, which ignore score and collects all of the 007 tokens anyway, resulting in a much more interesting TAS, in my opinion.

    Is that fire escape backboost doable in real time you think?

      I'm gonna say maybe, but not consistently. I don't think anybody would go for it in a good world record pace run, even in an IL, because it doesn't save much time and isn't worth going for after getting a crazy boost. But if you get lucky and none of the debris lands in front of you, it can save up to a tenth of a second.

    Who would have thought a level almost entirely on rails has so many small opportunities for timesaves! This is definitely one of the more interesting levels to see given that it previously appears to be very straightforward. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the game
